Archaeology in real-time
meditation on impermanence

Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, The Soul Station, 2024

Join us for Ghostlands of the Web—an online expedition through abandoned digital worlds that once aspired to be the future.

THURSDAY, 7 August 2025, 6-8PM

Meeting point: TO BE REVEALED AFTER BOOKING
Remember when everyone was talking about Web3, NFTs, and blockchain as the next big thing? The virtual realm was envisioned as humanity's next refuge.

Now, most of these projects lie deserted. Yet their decay is as meaningful as their original design.

Ghostlands of the Web is a meditation on impermanence: we’ll reflect on the mechanics of forgetting and memory, digital ghosts, the aesthetics of abandonment and the collapse of bold intentions—all within speculation-rich, fantastic settings. We’ll encounter digital artworks left behind on dead servers, like collections never rescued from forgotten homes. Perhaps it will prompt a nagging thought: what does virtual decay reveal about the nature of reality itself?

A metaverse developer will join us, sharing insights into the technical side, behind-the-scenes stories, and the shifting context of the digital art and VR industry.

Take part in exploring what remains of the future we were promised.

To make the most of the event, it’s best to participate using a laptop or desktop with stable internet.

EVENT GUIDE

From 2020 to 2023, I curated digital platforms and collaborated with metaverse development teams worldwide. Utopian ideas, projects, and visionary worlds emerged, bloomed, and crumbled before my eyes.

Access to the most virtual spaces is finite. This may be the last time anyone visits them. Soon, as developers stop paying hosting bills, more worlds will collapse altogether. Ghostlands of the Web offers archaeology in real-time within virtual reality environments. Each supports multiplayer functionality, allowing us to walk (or fly) together and share impressions live. If someone gets lost, experiences a system glitch, or gets thrown out by an error code —that too is part of the experience: abandoned worlds have unstable terrains.
