What if the past never truly disappears? Pavel Otdelnov invites you into a rare communion with time itself through London's East End — a chance to sense how long-lost realities continue to thread through the everyday.

SATURDAY, 2 August 2025, 1-4PM

Meeting point: Whitechapel library, stepney way entrance, 51.517412, -0.060710
Pavel approaches memory as a distinct aesthetic category. The walk he curates is a contemplative immersion into an urban vortex where the past reveals itself through fragments of recollection, reconstruction, and myth.

The event unfolds in three movements:

We begin by retracing the steps taken by Canadian artist Janet Cardiff through Whitechapel 30 years ago. Though the area has undergone sweeping change, something remains: the city stores its past in intangible textures — the hum of traffic, the cadence of footsteps, the scattered intonations of passersby.

Next, we enter a house that exists outside conventional time, reimagined in the textures, scents, and light of the 19th century — an environment designed to provoke sensory memory. Finally, we gather in a singular pub that hardly needs theatrical intervention to feel otherworldly. For decades, it has absorbed the city’s stories, waiting to become the backdrop to someone’s next chapter.

The city whispers its secrets. Tune in.

Access to all locations is included.
Welcome refreshments will be provided.
Please bring fully charged headphones and a phone with internet connection.
Limited to a group of 8 people to preserve the intimacy of the experience.

EVENT GUIDE

"A critical stance toward the past helps us resist the nostalgia we inevitably succumb to when reflecting on memories."
Pavel Otdelnov

Pavel Otdelnov explores the intersections of memory, ideology, and the shifting landscapes of industrial and post-industrial spaces. Through painting, installation, and other media, he reconstructs forgotten histories and reinterprets familiar imagery, opening a dialogue between personal experience and broader socio-political processes.
